Wilshere had joined the debate over Adnan Januzaj after England manager Roy Hodgson admitted the FA want the Manchester United starlet, who was born in Belgium but could qualify for several countries, to play for England. FIFA rules say Januzaj, 18, must live in England for at least five years to qualify.
Wilshere said: ‘The only people who should play for England are English people. If you live in England for five years it doesn’t make you English. If I went to Spain and lived there for five years I’m not going to play for Spain.’

Wilshere also urged England to retain a physical style, suggesting English players were stronger in the tackle than footballers from other nations.
He said: ‘We have to remember what we are, we are English and we tackle hard and we are tough on the pitch and we are hard to beat. We have great characters.
'You think of Spain and they are technical, but you think of England and you think they are brave and they tackle hard.'

But Fashanu again took umbrage with Wilshere's comments, sarcastically saying: 'Bloody foreigners. Coming over here and taking our places in the national squad. They don't even tackle as hard as us. #Idiot'
Fashanu also made reference to Owen Hargreaves' superb performance for England in their 2006 World Cup quarter-final against Portugal, which England lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw in which Wayne Roony was sent off.
Fashanu said, again with sarcasm: 'Owen Hargreaves certainly wasn't brave the day he put in an absolute shift for an embarrassingly bad 10-man England team.'

Wilshere later responded on Twitter, claiming he had been making a more general comment on English football.
